National Television Awards 2012 in London
There are many celebrities arrived on the red carpet at the National Television Awards 2012 in London. Coronation Street stars paid tribute to late cast member Betty Driver as they picked up the award for Best Serial Drama at the National Soap Awards tonight. Sally Dynevor accepted the award, which was presented by Paul O’Grady, saying ‘Thank you so much for this, thank you everybody, who’s voted for Coronation Street.’ Producer Phil Collinson said ‘Betty was a marvel. She was in the show for 42 years and was a wonderful woman. She’d have been so proud.’ Veteran actress Betty played barmaid Betty Williams for 42 years in the ITV soap.

Driver played Betty, nee Turpin in more than 2,800 episodes of Coronation Street. Star was famed for serving up her Lancashire hotpot stews at lunchtimes in the Rover’s Return. Driver’s contract was meant to only last three months, but she ended up staying in the role for 42 years until her death. Corrie was up against TV favorite including Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and EastEnders for the title of Best Serial Drama. Kelly was unable to be present to pick up the award. She is in the midst of rehearsals for She Stoops to Conquer at the National Theater.
